With a range of opportunities to work with the latest technologies, and a commitment to back the broader engineering community through open source, our mission is to power your success. The Chief Technology Officer Organization’s vision is to raise the bar for technical excellence, talent, strategy, and standards across Technology. It also seeks to cultivate and foster technical innovation, as well as elevate and amplify the technical heartbeat of the organization.

As American Express grows, our global technology infrastructure grows.  Our organization’s goal is to help engineers rapidly deploy new applications, so that the company can bring products to market quickly with superior economics and provide the best possible experience to our customers around the world.

Some of the problems we'll work on include:

- Improving time to business value for developers, by reducing the amount of time it takes to provision and deploy applications
- Defining the developer experience for Amex applications of the future
- Ensuring developers are easily able to provision infrastructure that is secure and compliant by default

As a Software Engineer in our group, you will:

- Scope technical projects and break them down into user stories and tasks within an engineering team
- Directly contribute to the design and coding of our software systems, serving as a role model for how great software is built at Amex
- Build systems that are secure, reliable, scalable, and extensible
- Make sound technical decisions utilizing the advice of teammates and contribute to technical conversations with other engineering teams
- Mentor graduates, interns, and apprentices - assist them with projects that develop their skills

You may be a fit if:

- You have at least 3 years of experience working in a professional environment as a software engineer
- You have contributed to the design and build of cloud-native applications written in Java or Go
- You have done “DevOps” work, such as building CI/CD pipelines or setting up cloud hosting environments
- You have worked with Infrastructure As Code tooling, for example Terraform
- You have worked with policy enforcement solutions, such as Sentinel or Gatekeeper
- You have some experience mentoring more junior engineers, helping them to succeed and grow in their roles
- You build effective work relationships, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and your colleagues at all levels and across all teams trust you

Technologies we use at Amex include:

- Go and Java are our primary server languages, with Kotlin and TypeScript starting to gain traction, and JavaScript and Python used in niche situations
- Our browser applications are based on React
- Code lives in GitHub Enterprise and flows to production through a CI/CD pipeline built on GitHub Actions
- Code runs in Kubernetes-managed Docker containers hosted in a mix of private and public clouds
- Infrastructure is managed with Terraform
- Other key tech includes GraphQL, gRPC, Kafka, Postgres, Couchbase, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, OpenTracing, Jaeger, Prometheus, and Grafana
