The Seattle Vaccine Trials Unit (VTU), part of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, implements an array of studies researching HIV and other infectious diseases.  The VTU collaborates with study sponsors, conducting clinical trials designed to test the safety and efficacy of preventive HIV vaccines.

 

Located in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood, the VTU is responsible for the recruitment, selection, and enrollment of local study volunteers.  Since opening in 1987, the Seattle VTU has educated and worked with local community members who are interested in participating in research.  We collaborate with many community-based organizations, such as African American Reach and Teach Ministries, Entre Hermanos, LGBTQ+ Center, POCAAN and Lifelong.

 

Together with the help of our volunteers, we hope to end the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

 

The Seattle HIV Vaccine Trials Unit is seeking committed, outgoing persons to join our community outreach team. The Outreach Specialist I/II is a part-time position. The ideal candidates must be available for meetings and have a flexible schedule, including work on weekdays, nights and weekends. Anticipated hours are roughly 10-15 hrs/week, including one 2-hour meeting and 1-2 shifts per week. Other administrative projects may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities

The Outreach Specialist's primary responsibilities will be to recruit participants for our groundbreaking HIV studies, including preventive HIV vaccine studies with people who do not have HIV and other clinical trials that may include People Living with HIV (PLWH).  Study recruitment efforts will focus on the needs of the research protocol; in general, studies may include people who are 18-50 years old with an emphasis on diverse populations.  The Outreach Specialist will be responsible for identifying events and locations to recruit study volunteers, including outreach in local venues, such as street locations, community events, community-based organizations, as well as bars and clubs. Work will include communication via text, email and Microsoft Teams as well as some administrative tasks. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Outreach Specialist I:

• High School graduation or the equivalent. 
• Six months of experience in a job involving telephone or in-person contact with the public. 
• Ability to read and follow written instructions. 
• Ability to neatly document information. 
• Good verbal communication skills. 
• Positions which involve travel may require reliable transportation.

Outreach Specialist II:

All minimum qualifications of Outreach Specialist I, plus:

• Minimum of one year of counseling or interviewing experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Outreach Specialist I:

• At least 21 years old.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
• Bilingual Spanish.
• Live in the Seattle area or in close proximity. 
• Ability to get to various locations within the Seattle area. 
• Close familiarity with some Seattle neighborhoods to identify people who would best fit the desired populations for research protocols.
• Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, transgender, non-conforming, non-binary people as well as racial, ethnic, cultural, and sexual diversity.
• Candidates for the position must be willing to learn a variety of skills related to recruiting for clinical trials for healthy adults.
• Previous experience recruiting for clinical trials.
• Familiarity with LGBTQ+ community venues or experience working with men who have sex with men (MSM) and/or transgender communities.
• Experience working with the public or in customer service.
• Professional experience as a social media contributor (creating and posting content and images)

Outreach Specialist II:

All preferred qualifications of Outreach Specialist I, plus:

• BA/BS in the Social Sciences or training in Research Methodology.

Outreach Specialist I: The hourly pay range for this position is from $20.76 to $29.54 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

Outreach Specialist II: The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.78 to $31.01 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
