Working at Target means helping all families discover the joy of everyday life. We bring that vision to life through our values and culture. Learn more about Target here.

Target UX is a group of design, content, research, and accessibility practitioners and experts, with a passion for improving and innovating our digital experiences for Target’s guests, team members, and partners. Here, we pride ourselves on designing tangible, inspiring, and impactful solutions that serve all aspects of our business– and being a part of the team means you will play a critical role for Target’s digital experience by increasing ease, simplicity, value, and delight for every touchpoint.

About the team

The Emerging Experiences team focuses on future-forward guest experiences that are seamless, inspiring, and full of possibility. We imagine what’s next for Target’s digital and physical touchpoints—and bring those ideas to life through immersive, high-fidelity storytelling.

This team works across the ecosystem—collaborating with product, engineering, brand, stores, and enterprise strategy—to prototype the future and make it real. We're here to create clarity in complexity. At Target, design isn’t just how something works—it’s how it feels. It’s how we bring joy to everyday life, through moments of clarity, emotion, and care.

About the role

As a Lead UX Designer with a focus on experience prototyping and design technology, you’ll blend strategy and craft to bring clarity to complexity. You’ll use prototyping as a tool for alignment, exploration, and experimentation—helping teams imagine, test, and evolve bold new experiences that reflect Target’s values and serve our guests in meaningful ways.

You’ll help shape vision in ambiguous spaces, co-lead sprints that combine near-term iteration with long-term ambition, and bring together design, technology, and storytelling to influence investment and execution across Target’s ecosystem.

Your work will help millions of guests feel more connected, empowered, and inspired every time they interact with Target.

Responsibilities

  • Build high-fidelity, multi-sensory prototypes to test concepts and drive alignment—using interaction, motion, sound, and visuals to tell stories that stick

  • Use rapid prototyping, testing, and signal gathering to evaluate desirability, feasibility, and directional impact of new experience concepts

  • Contribute to the evolution of Target’s prototyping practice—exploring new tools, workflows, and methods to help teams move faster from vision to validation

  • Mentor designers in prototyping practices, experimentation methods, and storytelling craft

  • Lead cross-functional design sprints that explore emerging behaviors, tech opportunities, and business possibilities

  • Translate fuzzy opportunities into experience models, service blueprints, and future-state journeys

  • Design with an eye toward scale—creating systems, patterns, and interaction models that can be extended across digital and omni-channel platforms

  • Partner with senior leaders across product, UX, marketing, and stores to shape strategy through design

  • Contribute to a strong design culture that values inclusivity, expressiveness, systems thinking, and guest-centered innovation

About you

  • 7+ years of experience in UX, including several in a senior or lead capacity

  • Proven track record using prototyping to explore, align, and influence—at multiple fidelities, using tools and generative AI for design, development, and prototyping (such as Figma, Principle, Framer, Cursor, Lovable; ability to write markup and/or develop in HTML, JS, SwiftUI, Jetpack Compose is a plus)

  • Fluency in design systems, UX patterns, and modern interaction paradigms across devices

  • Strong communication and storytelling skills—you can bring partners along through concept decks, prototypes, and vision artifacts

  • Experience driving cross-functional efforts, co-leading with product and engineering, and helping teams align through ambiguity

  • A passion for inclusive design, accessibility, and delivering joyful experiences that connect with real human needs

Highly relevant experience

  • Experience in motion design, animation, or sound design for interactive experiences

  • Familiarity with GenAI tools as part of the ideation or prototyping workflow

  • Background in service design or omni-channel experience strategy

  • Experience leading design sprints or early-stage product development in large orgs or startups

Portfolio guidance

To be considered, please include a portfolio that demonstrates:

  • High-fidelity prototyping (at multiple fidelities, including interaction/motion)

  • Experience strategy or vision work (e.g. journey maps, blueprints, future-state flows)

  • Examples of how your work drove alignment, influenced decisions, or shaped outcomes across teams

This position may be considered for a Remote or Hybrid (known internally at Target as "Flex for Your Day") work arrangement based on Target's needs.  A Remote work arrangement means the team member works full-time from home or an alternate location that's not a Target location, does not have a desk at a Target location and may travel to HQ up to 4 times a year.  A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member's core role may be performed either remote or onsite at a Target location depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day. Work duties cannot be performed outside of the country of the primary work location, unless otherwise prescribed by Target.
