Lead UX Researcher
Job Description
Ilir Sela started Slice with the belief that local pizzerias deserve all of the advantages of major franchises without compromising their independence. Starting with his family’s pizzerias, we now empower over tens of thousands of restaurants with the technology, services, and collective power that owners need to better serve their digitally minded customers and build lasting businesses. We’re growing and adding more talent to help fulfil this valuable mission. That’s where you come in.
Please note, we are only considering applications from candidates based in the US and Eastern time zone at this time.
The Challenge to Solve
Slice is entering a pivotal phase of growth and to deepen our understanding of customers and users, we are hiring a Lead UX Researcher to establish a research practice to enable better decision-making. The Lead UX Researcher will lay the foundation for how we understand and act on user needs, behaviors, and contexts. Your mission is to turn scattered insights and assumptions into a cohesive, usable and continuously growing body of knowledge. You will champion research as a strategic function, enabling product, design and business teams to make confident, evidence-backed decisions.
The Role
After your first year at Slice, you will have achieved a number of key outcomes around culture and practice:
A central research repository
- You have established a scalable system for storing and accessing research outputs, with the intention of surfacing and socializing meaningful customer and user insights.
- The repository is a single source-of-truth for user insights, and is regularly referenced in cross-functional work.
Insight-driven decisions are standard
- You synthesize findings in ways that are accessible and actionable. Your work enables teams to identify patterns, validate assumptions, and uncover unmet needs.
- Teams move faster by building on what we’ve already learned, not starting from zero.
Research is embraced as a critical aspect of product development
- More people and teams across the company feel confident gathering, interpreting, and applying user insights. Teams see research as an enabler, not a bottleneck.
- Research is an inherent element of discovery, prototyping, iteration, and validation. Designers and Product Managers feel supported in planning and conducting lightweight research, with your guidance.
- Stakeholders proactively seek research input early in planning cycles.
A more effective product org
- Your work informs product decisions, aligns stakeholders, and mitigates risk around investment of time and resources.
- Designers prototype with a clearer understanding of context and tasks.
- Product design work becomes more focused, relevant and effective. The design practice has greater impact across the business due to the clarity your research brings.
A deeper and more aligned understanding of customers
- You have led generative research that defines our key user types, jobs to be done, and contexts of use.
- A single view of customer and user insights is available across the organization, and updated as we grow out the Slice product and service offering.
- You partner with analytics, sales, and support to create a richer picture of customer and user experience across channels. Customer support and marketing functions can align messaging with how users think and speak.
- Crucially, customers can clearly see their voice is important. Their input is not only collected, but meaningfully acted on.
The Team
Your immediate peers will be the Product Design team, which is currently made up of seven (and more incoming!) amazing Product Designers, located across the US and the UK. You’ll also work in partnership and collaborate with other business functions such as Marketing and Operations. This role reports directly to the Head of Product Design.
The Winning Recipe
We’re looking for creative, entrepreneurial individuals who are excited to build world-class products for small business counters. These are the core competencies this role calls for:
- Deep experience leading UX research in a product organisation, ideally where you have built or scaled a research practice
- A strategic mindset, capable of aligning research with company-level goals
- Excellent storytelling skills: you know how to turn raw observations into actionable data
- Facilitation and mentoring skills: you help others grow their own research confidence and curiosity
- A collaborative nature: you build bridges between disciplines and make others feel empowered by research
