Job Description

About the Team

The Tax Team at OpenAI is part of the broader Finance organization and plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with evolving global tax obligations. Our mission is to develop scalable, automated, and accurate tax infrastructure that supports OpenAI’s operational speed, transparency, and global growth. We are transforming tax operations from a traditional, manual process into a forward-looking capability that leverages intelligent systems and integrated workflows.

About the Role

At OpenAI, we aren’t just preparing tax returns—we’re redefining what tax compliance looks like. As our Tax Compliance Manager, you’ll own the tax compliance engine for one of the most innovative organizations in the world, playing a foundational role in building the world’s first fully autonomous corporate tax reporting system.

This role goes far beyond executing returns. You’ll architect logic libraries, design next-generation workflows, and lead the infrastructure shift from outsourced tax prep to in-house, AI-powered computation. Our intelligent multi-agent systems classify, compute, reconcile, and report tax outcomes in real time—eliminating bottlenecks and enabling instant tax visibility across the business.

This role reports directly to the Director of Tax Reporting and will directly oversee external vendors and drive scope transitions to internal teams.  You’ll oversee U.S. income, gross receipts, and property tax compliance across our corporate and pass-through structures (1120, 1065, 5471, and state), transition core responsibilities from external vendors to OpenAI’s internal systems, and guide the implementation of audit-ready, self-documenting tax engines for areas such as GILTI, CAMT, and FDII.

This is a pivotal opportunity to build—not inherit—the systems that will define OpenAI’s tax future. You’ll do it as part of a lean, high-talent team backed by OpenAI’s engineering, design, and financial infrastructure.

Most companies spend years trying to automate even a small part of their tax stack. At OpenAI, we’re doing it in under 12 months—and we’re building something that no one else has.

This role is based in San Francisco. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role you'll:

  • Manage preparation and review of U.S. federal and state income tax returns, including consolidated corporate returns (Form 1120), partnership filings (Form 1065), and related schedules.

  • Own the full compliance cycle, including estimated payments, extension filings, provision-to-return reconciliations, and audit-ready documentation.

  • Maintain a real-time, transparent compliance calendar across OpenAI entities and jurisdictions.

  • Address and resolve IRS and state tax notices; lead audit responses and tax authority correspondence.

  • Transition OpenAI from outsourced tax return prep to internal, logic-driven, agent-powered return computation.

  • Design and maintain modular, version-controlled tax logic libraries.

  • Collaborate with and support Tax Technology, Finance, and Legal teams to align tax logic with ERP data systems and reporting pipelines.

  • Collaborate with and support Tax Technology team members on the implementation and optimization of CorpTax and ensure accurate data flow into agentic workflows.

  • Contribute to Project Hive—OpenAI’s initiative to build agent-led tax compliance systems—by supporting logic testing, simulation environments, and metadata governance.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have deep expertise in U.S. federal and multistate corporate income tax compliance, including Forms 1120, 1065, and 5471.

  • Knowledge of ASC 740 and experience aligning tax provision with final return outputs.

  • Track record of managing external vendors and internal stakeholders across tax compliance workflows.

  • Familiarity with tax software (CorpTax preferred), ERP systems (e.g., Oracle, Workday), and workflow automation tools.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead process transformations and implement technology-driven improvements.

  • CPA, MST, or JD preferred.

  • Are excited by the opportunity to transform tax compliance from a historic result focus into a real-time, operational capability.

  • Love building new systems from the ground up, rather than inheriting legacy tools.

  • Want to go from compliance executor to process architect, codifying rules and designing future-facing tax workflows.

  • Are curious about AI-driven automation and want to collaborate with engineers to codify tax positions into self-documenting systems.

  • Thrive in environments with high autonomy, intellectual rigor, and fast-paced innovation.

  • See audits and filings as downstream outputs of good systems—not just annual tasks.

  • Communicate clearly across disciplines, bridging Finance, Engineering, and Legal functions to ensure tax logic aligns with business reality.
