Mudflap serves the $800B trucking industry, the backbone of the U.S. economy. Our market-leading payment products help truckers save thousands of dollars on fuel (their #1 business expense), while providing our fuel stop partners with access to new, hard-to-reach customers. We’re a fast-growing marketplace business looking for a new exceptional junior engineer to join our transactions and payments team.
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of our platform. You’ll lead architectural initiatives, mentor team members, and drive the technical direction of our backend systems, built primarily in Ruby on Rails, to support our mobile and web applications.
We are extremely product and customer centric, and engineers play a key role in major company-wide projects. This is an opportunity to build at a rapid pace and continue creating a platform that hundreds of thousands of SMB trucking companies use to run their business - and love!
Work Location:
This can be a fully remote position. While we operate across multiple time zones, most collaboration happens during Pacific Time working hours. Candidates should be able to work a schedule aligned with the PT time zone.
Expectations (In this role, you will):
- Drive technical strategy for key initiatives, ensuring scalability, reliability, and performance across our systems
- Lead the design and development of large-scale, production-grade applications and APIs using Ruby on Rails
- Architect complex features and third-party integrations that are resilient and maintainable
- Set standards for technical excellence, code quality, and best practices across the engineering organization
- Mentor and guide engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and technical planning
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions
- Influence architectural decisions and contribute to long-term technical planning
- Design scalable, future-proof data models and database schemas
- Take full ownership of projects—from concept through to deployment and beyond
- Lead by example with clean, well-tested, maintainable code
Experience (What we look for):
- 10+ years of professional software development experience
- Extensive experience building robust, scalable backend systems with Ruby on Rails
- Proven track record of technical leadership and mentoring in high-performing teams
- Strong understanding of API design, system architecture, and backend performance optimization
- Passion for solving complex problems and simplifying them for others
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment typical of early-stage startups
- Curious, self-driven, and committed to continuous learning and improvement

The salary range for this role is $200,000 - $250,000. This information reflects a base salary range for this position based on current market data, which may be subject to change as new market data becomes available. The candidate's skills, experience, and other relevant factors will determine the exact compensation.
