Job Description

Under the direction of the AVP Finance & Administration, the Staff Accountant will support the day-to-day operations of the organization, providing essential accounting services that play an important part in maintaining financial integrity, ensuring compliance, and contributing to the smooth operations of the organization. This position is also responsible for providing critical administrative support, including vendor & contract management, central purchasing coordination, and insurance coordination. The ideal candidate will have experience in nonprofit accounting, a strong attention to detail, and a passion for supporting a mission-driven organization.

Primary responsibilities include, and are not limited to:  

Provide accurate and compliant general accounting & finance support: 

  • Perform day-to-day accounting activities, to include recording financial transactions, bank and payment reconciliations, balance sheet account reconciliations, maintaining general ledgers, and preparing journal entries.  
  • Review and verify financial transactions to ensure accuracy and maintain accurate records of all transactions 
  • Analyze and coordinate a variety of financial data, and report it in a useful and understandable manner 
  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) 
  • Assist with month- and year-end closing and preparation for the annual financial audit  
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the JCC general ledger chart of accounts 
  • Assist with the preparation and distribution of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for internal and external stakeholders 
  • Prepare and file periodic tax forms in compliance with MA and IRS deadlines, including but not limited to 1099 forms and MA state sales tax 
  • Support with special projects as assigned 

Ensure compliant and efficient grant/restricted fund accounting & reporting: 

  • Assist with the tracking and reporting of grant funds, ensuring expenditures are in line with grant agreements 
  • Support the preparation of financial reports for grantors and funders, ensuring compliance with their specific requirements 
  • Develop an understanding of accounting for restricted funds and provide support for the releasing funds with restriction and with the maintenance of accurate records of restricted and unrestricted funds 

Facilitate timely and effective accounts payable & vendor management: 

  • Support with the weekly processing of invoices and ensure timely payment to vendors 
  • Collect, validate and maintain vendor contracts, W9s, and COIs. Review vendor data and ensure proper tax classification for 1099 reporting.  
  • Manage corporate credit card programs, including cardholder onboarding/offboarding 
  • Review, reconcile, and post credit card expenses and employee reimbursements 
  • Ensure timely submission of receipts and proper coding of expenses in accordance with company policies 

Develop and implement centralized administrative processes: 

  • Manage and reconcile central business accounts such as subscriptions and shared vendor services 
  • Oversee and streamline purchasing of office supplies, services, and equipment in where appropriate and in coordination with department leads 
  • Support the AVP Finance & Administration with the coordination of business insurance policies (e.g. general liability, workers’ compensation, property, D&O), including completion of annual insurance renewal applications, claims management, and COI management.  
  • Assist with the conversion to a digital filing system for the Finance department, ensuring all documentation is properly archived and accessible.

Job Details: This full-time, salaried position offers a comprehensive benefits package, a supportive work environment [with a hybrid work option], and a competitive starting salary of $55,000 - $65,000 annually. The salary offered will ultimately be determined by relevant qualifications, experience, and JCC's internal equity.

Education and Experience: Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, and 2-4 years’ experience in accounting. Must have a strong understanding of accounting, financial analysis and reporting. Knowledge of relevant financial regulations and compliance standards. Must have strong computer skills: proficiency in accounting software, CRM software, and Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel. Experience with Great Plains/Microsoft Dynamics and Salesforce a plus.  

Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted at the JCC’s discretion to meet this minimum hiring criteria.

Physical Requirements:  This position primarily involves standard deskwork; work is performed in an office environment with no extreme conditions. Must be able to sit or stand for prolonged periods. Able to work well in a busy, dynamic and sometimes noisy environment involving multiple tasks and priorities. Able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds (boxes of supplies). This position is a hybrid position; some administrative duties may effectively be performed remotely while others require an in-office presence.
