The NERC Compliance Specialist will oversee and ensure compliance with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulations, and Regional Entity requirements applicable to Fervo’s geothermal energy projects. This individual will lead the development and execution of Fervo’s NERC Compliance Program, including both Operations & Planning (693) and Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) standards. The NERC Compliance Specialist will serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory bodies, lead internal audits and risk assessments, and work cross-functionally to integrate compliance into business operations. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and proactive, with a strong understanding of power systems and the evolving regulatory landscape. This position reports to Fervo’s Senior Counsel.
Requirements
Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and manage Fervo’s NERC Compliance Program across 693 and CIP standards
- Oversee compliance policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure regulatory alignment
- Administer compliance tracking tools, workflow systems, and evidence management repositories
- Maintain a compliance calendar and ensure all regulatory obligations are met on time
- Conduct internal audits, risk assessments, investigations, and mitigation planning
- Prepare self-reports and coordinate with Regional Entities to resolve potential noncompliance
- Lead responses to self-certifications, audits, spot-checks, and other regulatory engagements
- Monitor changes to NERC Reliability Standards and coordinate timely implementation
- Review technical documents (e.g., studies, one-line diagrams, protection system designs) for compliance
- Collaborate with development and construction teams to embed compliance into project lifecycles
- Provide compliance training and promote a culture of accountability across the organization
- Participate in industry working groups and engage with regulatory bodies to stay current on trends and best practices
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a technical, business, or related field (Electrical Engineering preferred)
- 5+ years of experience working with NERC Reliability Standards (693 and CIP), ideally in a GO/GOP environment
- Familiarity with power plant operations, systems design, and NERC/FERC regulatory frameworks
- Experience with compliance tracking and workflow management systems
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to manage detailed regulatory obligations
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and lead cross-functional initiatives
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with independent power producers and/or operating within the WECC region
- Background in cybersecurity or critical infrastructure protection
- Familiarity with geothermal or other renewable energy technologies
Location
Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at our Houston or Oakland office will be required.
