SUMMARY

  

The City of Edgewater is currently seeking part-time After-School Activity Instructors to develop and lead special interest and educational programs at Edgewater and Lumberg Elementary Schools. These classes will serve groups of 8–15 students and will be tailored to specific age ranges, based on input from the school’s principal (K–1st grade, 2nd–3rd grade, or 4th–5th grade).

We are looking for candidates who are well-prepared, creative, and enthusiastic, and who can foster a safe and engaging learning environment. Instructors are encouraged to design their own curriculum, with flexibility in both content and format. Program dates are also flexible and will be scheduled according to the instructor’s availability, typically taking place on weekday afternoons from 3:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. during the spring and fall semesters.

Successful instructors may be invited to return for future semesters and may have the opportunity to lead additional programs with the City of Edgewater.

Potential activities include, but are not limited to:
Dance, choir, chess and other board/strategy games, theater/drama, literature, and running/fitness/physical education.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited, to the following: 

· Develop dynamic and engaging curriculum based on expertise and skillset.

· Set up all equipment necessary in advance of the program start. 

· Communicate effectively with registered participants.

· Communicate effectively with Programs Coordinator, including making recommendations for equipment purchases.

· Assist in marketing efforts to increase awareness of the program instructed and other programs offered by the City of Edgewater. 

· Maintain a safe and inclusive environment for program participants.

· Maintain a positive attitude, take initiative, and work as a cohesive team with all staff members to ensure efficiency and camaraderie.

· Responds to accidents or incidents according to procedures. Effectively handles emergency situations involving fire alarms, CPR and First Aid.

· Upholds City and Department policies and procedures as well as applicable laws. 

· Maintains regular and punctual attendance.

· Participates in all training(s) and staff meetings as required. 

· Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Programs Coordinator. 


Requirements

  

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

1) Must have legal authorization to work in the United States of America.

2) Submit and pass a pre-employment background check. 

3) Must be at least eighteen (21) years of age. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

· Basic verbal and written English language skills and grammar to reasonably communicate information with the public and/or complete relevant written documentation required by job activities.

· Spanish language skills preferred.

· Excellent communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.

· The ability to perform multiple functions at once and the ability to handle the public in a friendly and professional manner.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

· Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.  

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES

· Previous experience working with elementary age participants in a group activity setting– required. 

· Prior experience teaching community-based programs - preferred.

· The patience and demeanor required to work varying personalities and abilities. 

· Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communication skills, to maintain effective working relationships with citizens, elected officials, appointing authorities, department heads, appointed boards, employees, and volunteers.

· Ability to work independently.

ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

· Effective audio-visual skills and perception needed for making observations, reading, writing, and communicating with others.

· Most duties are performed in an outdoor environment. The incumbent will experience exposure to weather elements and temperatures, construction site risks, and automobile travel.

· Ability to lift and carry items such as supplies and equipment, up to 50 pounds, on a frequent basis. 

· Ability to participate in and respond to routine conversation in person or via telephone, and distinguish telephone, printers, computers, and other auditory tones.
