About the role/team

Checkr is looking for a highly skilled Senior Engineering Manager to lead our Product Foundations Area. This pivotal role involves managing two key teams: Product Administration and Product Orchestration. These teams own some of the most complex and mission-critical systems at Checkr and are responsible for improving development efficiency and product consistency by providing common user interface components or shared domain services that product engineering teams can leverage. 

The ideal candidate for this role is highly motivated to advance their career to the next level and has extensive experience in cross-functional collaboration. They are adept at engaging with the team on an architectural level and possess exceptional communication skills, particularly in conveying complex technical topics to a diverse range of stakeholders. They are also accustomed to working directly with product partners. Furthermore, they have a proven track record of successfully leading large-scale system redesigns.

What you’ll do:

  • Drive technical vision for the team that motivates and excites the team for the next chapter
  • Partner closely with product management to build new features and enhance existing ones 
  • Work with the team to reduce technical debt and sustainably scale our architecture
  • Build relationships with customers and drive results with them 
  • Nurture and grow team members based on their career aspirations
  • Hire the best of the talent and continue to raise the bar for the team
  • Represent the team in planning and product meetings
  • Optimize engineering processes and policies to drive velocity and quality

What you bring:

  • 6+ years as an engineering manager, and before transitioning into a managerial role, you gained valuable experience as an individual contributor at the Senior Staff level or higher in a high growth environment. You have seen systems at a large scale and made significant contributions to their betterment.
  • 8+ years as an engineer 
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong skills in critical thinking, decision making, problem-solving, and attention to detail
  • Experience managing quality incidents as both a technical lead and a communication lead
  • Experience working on products at scale, and understanding the data, legal, human impact, and technical nuances of supporting highly regulated products
  • Strong experience with TDD, pair programming, and agile methodologies
  • Deep understanding of service architecture and system design, as well as lean software development principles
  • Ability to make high-level prioritization decisions quickly and thoughtfully
  • Backbone to make tough decisions when necessary
  • Able to develop inclusive teams to foster growth and diversity 
  • Ready to mentor the team to grow by providing stretch assignments and opportunities relevant to their interests
  • Humility, openness to feedback, and eagerness to learn

The base salary range for this role is $269,000 to $316,000 in San Francisco, CA
