We are seeking an experienced engineering leader to join our Content Delivery Team at The Washington Post. As the Manager of this team, you will lead a group of talented engineers who are responsible for building and maintaining partnerships as part of our growing Syndication business. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of our content distribution and partnerships, and to work with cutting-edge technologies and innovative partners like OpenAI.

Responsibilities
Mentor and coach talented full stack engineers
Recruit new engineers and grow a strong team
Prioritize and delegate tasks effectively
Manage team members across projects in a fast paced cross functional environment
Provide foundational support and empower team members to own their work
Drive forward and provide a vision on engineering goals and technology usage
Work with stakeholders in engineering and product to prioritize milestones and mitigate business risks
Manage an on-call cycle and ensure constant coverage on critical systems
Provide powerful insights by surfacing metrics and performance data to stakeholders and other engineers
Work closely with other engineering teams to understand their systems and work within the constraints of different technical stacks
Establish and foster a standard of engineer excellence that will maintain stability and quality across all of our systems
Ensure quality code and cloud practices are being used by the team
Oversee the operation and stability of our in-house email platform, ensuring high-quality, consistent email delivery
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
5+ years of experience as a software engineer, with a focus on:
Leading a team working primarily with Python, TypeScript/JavaScript and Java backends. Experience with Next.js, Express.js, and React is essential.
Strong command-line skills (Unix/Linux) and version control (Git)
DevOps tools such as Docker and Jenkins
Working knowledge of PostgreSQL required to oversee database architecture and implementation.
Writing unit and integration tests to ensure code quality
Preferred: Experience implementing LLMs into existing toolsets and workflows, and general knowledge of how LLMs operate.
Proven experience managing full stack engineering teams, with a focus on content delivery or email platforms
Strong leadership skills, including team development, performance management, and conflict resolution
Excellent communicator, able to collaborate across disciplines and present technical concepts clearly
Skilled in navigating high-pressure situations, driving platform stability, and tracking team performance metrics
Familiar with security best practices and adaptable to evolving technologies in content and email systems
The Washington Post’s policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.

The salary range for this position is:
144,600.00 - 241,100.00 USD AnnualThe actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience, and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements. This position may be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, and a member of the Talent Acquisition team will discuss bonus payment terms and conditions during the interview process.
