As a key leader within the Strategic Sourcing function, the individual will be tasked with managing multiple interlinked Category strategies, ensuring collective understanding of opportunities, solutioning vis a vis what is relevant to Stakeholders and ultimately tied to Companies’ priorities. They as the overall leader of the team will be expected to use an enterprise mindset to deliver across category boundaries and unlock additional value. This leader is also responsible to manage the team comprised of Associate Director and Senior Managers, ensuring the oversight of the category life cycle, which includes the development and implementation of multi-year sourcing strategies, in addition to the ongoing management of strategic supplier relationships and performance evaluation.
The categories under Site Operations encompass Facilities, Equipment, Lab Operations and Research Operations.
In partnership with Business Units and Finance, this position will be tasked with setting categories’ objectives and will assume complete responsibility for their implementation. You will assist in the ongoing management of essential strategic suppliers to promote continuous improvement, address complex challenges, and uncover new opportunities that deliver outstanding value to Vertex and, ultimately, our patients. In addition, the Director is expected to identify and drive the optimization of internal sourcing processes, workflows and interfaces in effort to reduce time of delivery and costs in support corporate objectives and industry best practices.
This position will be highly visible throughout the organization. As such, the leader must be comfortable and adept in effectively communicating with Senior leaders.
The position is based in our Boston, MA location. This role requires a hybrid work schedule: 3 days in the office & 2 days remote on a weekly basis. The role is global and will require some travel to all other facilities and locations to establish / maintain key business stakeholder relationships.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Strong business partnering acumen to develop trusting and influential relationships with stakeholders, understand business objectives and challenges, bring supplier and marketplace expertise, collaborate on multi-year strategic and operational plans, and drive business outcomes.
- Drive strategy for the combined categories under Site operations and oversee the Category Management for the categories under Site Operations including the development of sourcing strategies, management of strategic supplier relationship and performance management, in addition to tactical RFx activities.
- Own the Supplier Performance/Relationship Management process including supplier performance monitoring. Responsible for meeting preparation, pre-read documents, performance Dashboards, capturing action items, and ensuring appropriate follow-up including Executive Business Reviews that include Senior leaders both within Vertex and the 3rd party.
- Support the Business Owner with identification of all applicable risks as part of the Sourcing process, including coordination with Risk Subject Matter Experts to properly assess and develop mitigation plans, where necessary.
- Develops annual cost savings targets, in collaboration with Business Partners and Finance, within their specific category(ies) and is accountable for successful achievement.
- Manages complex negotiations on price and terms, that often include other internal stakeholders such as Business Partners and Legal. Able to independently create comprehensive negotiation planners that all internal parties are aligned with upfront.
- Leads a team of 4 direct reports with a focus on developing talent and creating a high performing team environment as well as act as mentor to support Sourcing colleagues, temporary workers, etc
Required Education, Experience and Competencies:
- Bachelor's degree required. Advanced degree (MS or MBA) in Scientific or Business discipline is preferred.
- Typically requires 10+ years of specific Sourcing experience, ideally several within a pharmaceutical / biotech industry,.
- Proficient category specific sourcing experience in Facilities, Equipment or Operations categories preferably within the pharmaceutical/biotech industry
- Advanced understanding of the nuances associated with working in the pharmaceutical industry and is adept at effectively managing given the complexities of operating in a regulated environment.
- Advanced understanding of industry best practices and category development; able to lead all aspects of Strategic Sourcing including RFx execution, negotiation, contract execution, supplier performance management, and business stakeholder management
- Advanced ability to influence Sr. Leadership to drive Sourcing’s value; experience as a “Thought Partner” with stakeholders
- Proficiency in Order-to-Cash (O2C) processes and systems, third-party logistics (3PL) / fourth-party logistics (4PL), Good Distribution Practice (GDP)
- Proficiency of all elements related to supplier risk management including related processes, tools, rating measurements with ability to train team members and business stakeholders to ensure appropriate execution
- Advanced knowledge of ERP systems, can expertly leverage e-Sourcing tools, including business intelligence and reporting platforms and teach other colleagues as needed
- Advanced analytical capabilities (data analysis and benchmarking research) as well as PowerPoint skills; expertise working with data analytical/reporting tools such as Microsoft Excel, Power BI, etc.
- Has firm understanding of Vertex’s strategic direction, financial performance, and key annual operational imperatives and can effectively communicate these to suppliers to ensure transparency and alignment with Vertex’s goals and objectives
- Advanced project management and organizational skills
- Advanced knowledge and demonstration of leading teams in collaborative manner to drive successful outcomes
- Advanced communication and presentation skills, able to clearly articulate opinions in concise and persuasive manner, comfortable speaking in front of groups and/or leading meetings that may include Executive Management personnel
- Advanced capability and extensive experience managing several projects while ensuring deliverables are fully met on-time, including more complex and involved projects
Pay Range:
$175,200 - $262,800Disclosure Statement:
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
