Founding Robotics SWE
Job Description
About Tuesday
Tuesday Lab builds delightful robots. We are driven by a desire to use the most advanced methods in robotics to bring joy into homes around the world – to make everyday life easier and more fun.
If you got into robotics because you watched old Boston Dynamics videos as a kid, or you made a 3D-printed hobby hexapod after finishing your problem sets, and you take your inspiration more from sci-fi movies than real life, you should come work at the Lab. We are engineers, researchers, builders, life enjoyers. We love living among our creations, and our mission is to make our magical world of animated objects accessible to everyone.
We are a small company sprinting to launch, so you should expect to work very hard – but the reward will be a robot in your home, and your friends begging you for a spot on our waitlist.
Founding Robotics Software Engineer (In-Office, NYC)
We are seeking a talented and driven senior robotics software engineer to develop the software architecture for our robot and to establish the behavioral core of the robot (localization, mapping, navigation systems). You should apply if you have a good understanding of the robotics software stack and enjoy working across the stack. This role is critical to our success in deploying delightful, helpful robots into homes – if you deliver, you will be a part of robotics history.
This is a unique role that’s great for someone who wants to be involved early on in a company, making high-impact decisions that will directly determine the success of the robot, and thus, our company.
We’re particularly interested in applicants who have interesting robotics side projects, especially if you’ve made something you yourself use at home.
Responsibilities:
Robotics infrastructure development: Develop and iterate on the software infrastructure of the robot, first as quick prototype code and then as production code.
Core robotics development: Develop baselines for localization, mapping, navigation, obstacle detection and object identification. Make decisions about which systems need to be built in house and which can be pulled from open source.
Full-stack Engineering: Engineer the full stack, including robotics system architecture, the API layer, the behavior layer and the control layer.
Hardware Integration: Characterize actuators, select sensors, etc. – always with the goal of keeping costs down.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with hardware engineers, ML engineers and character designers to iterate on hardware design
Scalability & Reliability: Build solutions that can transition from prototypes to production-ready systems for a consumer product.
Qualifications:
Proven Experience: Degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics or a related field. Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree + 4 years of work experience or Master’s degree + 2 years of work experience. Work experience should include robotics software development across the stack.
Hardware Knowledge: Experience with motor characterization, sensor selection, calibration, etc.
Strong Empirical Skills: Ability to implement, test, analyze and modify your methods quickly
Product Focus: You believe in home robots and will do whatever it takes to deliver polished, robust behaviors to our customers
Startup Mentality: Tackle a wide range of tasks—beyond robotics algorithms—when needed, in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
Location: Ability to work in-office in NYC at least four days a week
If you don’t have these qualifications, but you really want to do this job, you should apply for it anyway. This is a startup: passion and work ethic count for a lot.
What Tuesday offers:
The opportunity to play a critical role in deploying robots into the home. This is awesome for people who have thought about becoming founders themselves, or are looking to apply their deep engineering expertise to a high impact career that brings more joy into the world.
You will be surrounded by other people like you: people with deep expertise, who love playful applications, and are excited about building the future.
PTO, health insurance, 1 flexible remote day per week (we trust that you will work hard no matter what, and we hope this makes it easier for you to do a good job while taking care of your personal needs), a little treat on Tuesdays.
