Job Description

We are looking for a skilled and innovative Core Android Engineer specializing in stylus-based handwriting optimization to join our mission of transforming modern education. You’ll play a key role in building a paper-like digital handwriting experience on Android tablets, elevating the way students and educators interact with content. If you're passionate about digital ink tech, latency-critical UI systems, and expressive input interfaces — this role is for you.

Location: Remote

Type: Contractual (1 year)

you’ll be responsible for —

  • Architecting and developing high-performance canvas technology to deliver smooth, real-time stylus input with near-zero latency.
  • Creating custom SurfaceViews and leveraging Android internals to mimic tactile, paper-like handwriting on digital screens.
  • Supporting multiple pen types (marker, pencil, highlighter) with differentiated ink rendering styles and behavior.
  • Working with undocumented Android APIs and deep system-level graphics features to push the limits of what Android can do with handwriting.
  • Building internal SDKs to power the handwriting engine across multiple products and devices.
  • Collaborating closely with designers to translate aesthetic and haptic feedback requirements into technical realities.
  • Diagnosing and resolving bottlenecks in the stylus rendering pipeline and touch input system.

you need —

  • Deep expertise in Android, with strong command of core components including SurfaceView, Canvas, View hierarchy, and Stylus APIs.
  • 3–6 years of experience developing real-time graphical or input systems in Android using Java/Kotlin and C++.
  • Proven knowledge in latency optimization, frame rendering, and graphics pipeline performance tuning.
  • Ability to build from scratch and work beyond public documentation using hidden/undocumented APIs.
  • Experience developing custom views, internal SDKs, and touch-input UIs for Android-based applications.
  • Strong research skills and an experimental mindset to validate approaches and adapt to edge-case scenarios.
  • Collaborative spirit and ability to clearly communicate technical constraints with design and product teams.

bonus points for —

  • Prior experience at stylus-focused companies (e.g. TL Draw, OneNote, Nebo, Notability).
  • Contributions to sketching/drawing/annotation applications or proprietary handwriting tech.
  • Shader development or ink rendering pipelines (OpenGL, Vulkan, or similar).
  • Exposure to eInk tablets, digital notebooks, or education-focused input systems.
  • Projects or publications in human-computer interaction, digital ink, or real-time gesture recognition.

what you get —

  • Best in class salary: We hire only the best, and we pay accordingly.
  • Proximity Talks: Meet other designers, engineers, and product geeks — and learn from experts in the field.
  • Keep on learning with a world-class team: Work with the best in the field, challenge yourself constantly, and learn something new every day.
