Job Description

About Eyebot

Eyebot is an outcome-focused technology company on a mission to make vision care accessible to everyone, equally. Headquartered in Boston’s North End and backed by top investors and the National Science Foundation, our 90-second vision test kiosk is reshaping how vision care is delivered.

If you’re passionate about solving big problems and building the future of vision care, we’d love to hear from you.

About The Role

We’re looking for a Mechanical Engineer to help design and scale the physical systems that power Eyebot’s diagnostic kiosks. You’ll work across concept development, rapid prototyping, and product refinement, turning novel optical systems, mechatronics, and user interactions into manufacturable, reliable, and user-friendly products.

You’ll collaborate closely with hardware, software, and product teams to build devices that are robust in the field and delightful to use. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving physical design challenges, iterating quickly, and bridging the gap between prototype and production.

Note: This is a full-time, in-office role based in Boston. We work together 4-5 days a week to support rapid prototyping and cross-functional collaboration.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design, prototype, and refine precision mechanical assemblies and enclosures for optical, electronic, and user-facing systems

  • Translate early product ideas into CAD models, 3D prints, and machined parts for rapid testing

  • Develop mechanisms for motion control, alignment, and repeatable calibration

  • Evaluate material and manufacturing choices based on cost, durability, and aesthetics

  • Work with contract manufacturers and vendors to support DFM, prototyping, and scaling

  • Build and test mechanical subsystems in-house to ensure reliability and ease of assembly

  • Collaborate with electrical and software teams to integrate mechanical components with embedded systems, sensors, and actuators

  • Support compliance with safety and usability standards, including IEC 60601-1

  • Example Projects

    • Design a robust and compact motorized camera carriage for precision optical alignment

    • Build a custom enclosure for a new kiosk form factor with consideration for airflow, shielding, and user ergonomics

    • Iterate on door mechanisms, hinges, and access panels to support servicing and field repair

What We're Looking For:

Technical

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

  • 3–8 years of experience as an engineer

  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Onshape preferred)

  • Experience designing and prototyping mechanical systems with moving parts, tight tolerances, and precision alignment

  • Comfortable working hands-on with 3D printers, CNCs, and rapid prototyping tools

  • Understanding of material properties, part tolerancing, and manufacturing constraints (plastic, metal, etc.)

  • Ability to take a system from napkin sketch to production-ready design

  • A portfolio or work samples showing real-world mechanical design experience

Personality

  • You’re energized by fast-paced environments and excited to grow with a startup that’s scaling quickly

  • You take ownership of your work and care deeply about quality

    • You hold yourself (and your teammates) to a high bar

    • You follow through on commitments and take responsibility for outcomes

  • You bring a low ego, collaborative mindset and a sense of humor. You are easy to work with, open to feedback, and able to keep perspective even when things do not go according to plan

Bonus

  • Experience with optical alignment or precision mechanics for vision or imaging systems

  • Familiarity with IEC 60601-1 or other electromechanical product safety standards

  • Exposure to DFM, sheet metal, injection molding, or low-volume assembly methods

  • Experience working on kiosks, robotics, or consumer-facing hardware products

  • Comfort working alongside EE and firmware teams to debug system-level issues

What We Offer:

  • Flexible work schedule with unlimited PTO

  • A culture where every idea is welcome, no matter how out there it sounds — that’s how Eyebot got started

  • Full health, dental, and vision insurance

  • Commuter support and wellness benefits

  • A collaborative office environment in Boston’s North End, with regular team lunches and a great waterfront location

  • The chance to build products that improve lives and redefine how vision care is delivered
