The Opportunity

At Hinkley Point C (HPC) we are building two new nuclear reactors, the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK providing low carbon electricity for around six million homes.

As a Fuel Route Engineer, you’ll join a pioneering team responsible for establishing and managing the fuel route and radioactive waste operations across both HPC units. You’ll act as a subject matter expert, helping to shape the operational framework, train future operators, and ensure the highest standards of safety and compliance. Initially part of the Pre-Operations department, your work will evolve as HPC transitions into full operation, making this a unique opportunity to grow with the project.

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll be instrumental in developing and implementing the procedures that govern fuel route and radioactive waste operations. From supporting commissioning activities to ensuring compliance with safety cases, your work will directly impact the reliability and safety of HPC’s operations.

As a subject matter expert, you’ll provide technical leadership, guide operational decisions, and support the training and qualification of future engineers. You’ll also collaborate with contractors, oversee testing and procedural reviews, and help define the long-term operational scope of the plant.

In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing and performing nuclear fuel and core component handling operations, ensuring all activities are conducted safely and in compliance with relevant Technical and Environmental Specifications. You will manage the release and return to service of Fuel Route and Radiological Waste plant systems in close coordination with the Main Control Room Supervisor. Your duties will also include carrying out routine testing and supporting return-to-service activities in line with the station’s work week plan.

While working within the Work Execution Centre, you will contribute to the planning process by reviewing and providing input on the weekly schedule to ensure tasks are executed effectively. In situations involving unexpected plant behaviour, you will be expected to take conservative action to maintain safety. A key aspect of the role is maintaining oversight of Fuel Route operations, offering coaching and constructive feedback to personnel to support continuous improvement and operational excellence.

Your role will involve applying your engineering judgement to monitor plant status, support shift operations, and investigate issues. You’ll contribute to weekly planning, assist with scheduled activities, and ensure that all work aligns with the highest standards of nuclear professionalism.

Who You Are

You bring a solid technical foundation, ideally with an HNC or equivalent in engineering or a related field, and experience in nuclear operations or a comparable environment. Your proactive approach and commitment to high operational standards make you a reliable and valued team member.

You have a strong understanding of nuclear fuel handling, storage systems, and radioactive waste management. Your communication and organisational skills enable you to engage effectively with colleagues and stakeholders, while your enthusiasm and determination help drive positive change.

It would be advantageous if you have experience with EPR or PWR systems, are working towards chartered status, or have familiarity with UK nuclear regulations and best practices. Most importantly, you’re motivated by the opportunity to contribute to a safer, more sustainable energy future.
