About the role

 

Codan is seeking a senior legal professional to lead its Legal and Compliance function across the Americas region. This strategic role is responsible for ensuring that all business activities within the Americas region of the Codan Group comply with applicable legislation, regulatory requirements, and internal standards.

 

You will provide high-quality, commercially focused legal and compliance advice to regional business units, enabling sound decision-making and proactive risk management. The position includes leadership of the regional legal team, driving a culture of performance, accountability, and solution-oriented support. As a key member of the global legal leadership team, you will work closely with the Group General Counsel to support the development and execution of Codan’s global legal and compliance strategy.

 

Key responsibilities will include

 

  • Lead the Legal & Compliance function across the Americas, aligning with Codan’s global legal and compliance strategy.
  • Provide legal advice and support on all commercial contracts, risk related matters, M&A and strategic initiatives, and relevant regional regulatory matters.
  • Manage a high-performing regional legal team and external counsel (as necessary).
  • Oversee compliance programs, policies, and training across the region.
  • Provide oversight and direction as it applies to government contracting, export controls, sanctions, and IP management.
  • Advise senior leadership and regional business unit heads on legal risk, governance, and strategic initiatives.
  • Ensure regional alignment with global legal and compliance frameworks.

 

About You


You are a senior U.S.-licensed attorney with a minimum of 15 years post-admission experience, with significant time spent in-house at a public company or at a top-tier law firm. You bring deep expertise in commercial law, US federal and state government contracting (e.g., FAR/DFARS), regulatory compliance, and corporate governance, with a strong track record of advising complex, multi-state or international operations.

You have successfully led legal teams and partnered with executive leadership to navigate regulatory requirements and manage legal risk. You possess a knowledge of U.S. export control regulations (including EAR and ITAR), sanctions, and some experience with data privacy laws is desirable. With strong judgment, negotiation skills, and a clear, professional communication style, you are a strategic, resilient and solutions-driven advisor committed to supporting business growth and regulatory integrity across the region.

This position will need to undertake interstate and international travel and will require ability to achieve US Security Clearance.

 

Within the Codan business we recognise and respect the need for flexible working arrangements, however due to the high touch team engagement nature of this role, it will be predominantly based at our Ashburn, Virginia facility.
