Job Description

Summary of Position

The Community Director supports the Department of Residence Life by overseeing an on-campus community, supervising student staff, supporting student staff-led programming, and providing timely interventions to support the personal and academic development of community members. This position provides essential leadership in crisis management and responding to student concerns.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support the academic mission of the University in Residence Life through leading efforts around student learning/development, community development, and civic engagement programming.
  • Provide leadership for assigned community, including supervising and evaluating Residence Life student staff, (Community Advisors and Community Development Assistants).
  • Coordinate community development opportunities in assigned communities; advise Community Advisors and Community Development Assistants in creating and developing community events; monitor and manage the community development budget; collect and assess student-reported data about community development opportunities.
  • Support work in collateral assignments areas as designated by the Director or Assistant Director of Residence Life. Collateral assignments can include: sustainability initiatives, student leadership development opportunities, and belonging and persistence programming.
  • Assist the Director and Assistant Director of Residence Life in collecting and analyzing student experience data; apply analysis to continuous improvement plans.
  • Advise and mentor individual students, provide support to students of concern, and conduct mediations between community members.
  • Assist the department with tasks such as housing selection, student leader selection, and student leader training.
  • Participate as part of the on-call duty rotation, including weekends and holidays, and respond to crises and emergencies when the University is closed.
  • Work collaboratively with campus partners, including but not limited to Facilities, Public Safety, and other student support areas.
  • Serve as a hearing officer for student conduct cases, including communicating and enforcing student responsibilities.
  • Coordinate daily and long-term administrative tasks related to Residence Hall operations, providing timely and accurate documentation of administrative tasks, operational processes, and stakeholder communications.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in short- and long-range planning for the department.
  • Serve on University committees and work groups.
  • Perform other duties as apparent or assigned by supervisor(s).

Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • This position requires the incumbent to live on campus in University provided housing.
  • This position is part of the on-call duty rotation, which includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Typical work environment is an office, working at a desk for long periods of time.
  • Regular phone and computer.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related undergraduate, graduate, or professional experience in Residence Life, student development, or higher education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs Administration or Leadership, Higher Education Administration or Leadership, College Counseling, Social Work, or related field.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a diverse work environment.
  • Ability to conduct a full range of administrative functions and project management effectively, with solid organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to lead/teach.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate patience and understanding.
  • Previous supervisory experience and leadership skills.

Additional Information

Compensation & Benefits at Augsburg University

  • The compensation range is $40,000 - $44,000 per year, DOQ.
  • As part of the total compensation package, the position also receives the following benefits:
