Job Description
Purpose of the Position
The NPI Engineering Supervisor leads the New Product Introduction (NPI) group responsible for introducing new catalog and system level products into production. The position is responsible for meeting goals and objectives by overseeing and directing assigned projects and taking appropriate actions to ensure project completion on time, within budget, and with defined resources. The position will provide technical advice to the project team. Although the location of the position is in Sterling, VA, it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations from time to time.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Oversee a team of employees and prioritize work to complete projects on schedule.
- Reads and follows plans, material lists and guidelines and distributes jobs appropriately.
- Fulfills all regular new product release tasks and completes required deliverables in a timely manner.
- Organizes, leads, and trains employees to complete product releases within established guidelines, best practices and periods.
- Co-ordinate and monitor new product deliverable goals for engineering, marketing, and production.
- Manage new product introduction into production planning and assembly schedules.
- Monitor 1st article production, including selection of manufacturing methods and operation of product designs.
- Work with the engineering teams to generate preliminary drafts of build documentation and assembly instructions, manage ECOs, BOMs, item creation within Thorlabs ERP system
- Assist with completing functional product testing and characterization.
- Research, design, evaluate, and maintain mechanical products, systems and processes to meet production design requirements.
- Complete pre-production product validation and costing
- Consolidate product feedback, compatibility testing and specification adjustments to enhance the design of customer inspired products and new product lines.
- Work with different engineering disciplines to keep projects on schedule and keep track of project status and issues affecting timing
- Comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Collaborate with the marketing team to ensure all guidelines and requirements for website publication are met for product releases.
- Contribute to the mentoring, career development and continuing education of engineers.
- Ensure senior management needs are met, maintained, and work with them to allocate engineering resource to various projects.
- Advise planners or R&D Manager of potential missed dates or challenges for products currently in final stages of the release process

Experience:
- 3-5 years' experience supervising and supporting/leading projects within a manufacturing/engineering environment.
- OR Proven ability to support or lead projects within a technical or engineering setting
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in physics, Engineering, or other related field
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience with SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software.
- Familiarity with electrical or optical design software a plus
- Advanced knowledge of manufacturing operations
- Strong proficiency in MS office and communication tools.
- Proven ability to lead teams, partner with management to resolve conflicts and lead indirect resources. Effectively communicates and facilitates presentations (internally and externally).
- Demonstrates experience in leading product development efforts and recognizable knowledge of product development processes.
- Knowledge of MRP and PLM systems
- Proven ability to direct resources, plan project activities and meet financial budgets.
The estimated pay range for this role is $99,210 - $ 130,463 annually
