Description

The Accounting Specialist is a key contributor to the financial operations of South Dakota Soybean Processors (SDSP), responsible for supporting accounts payable and/or accounts receivable functions. This role ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial transactions, supports internal and external compliance requirements, facilitates vendor and customer relationships, and contributes to the timely completion of month-end close and financial reporting activities.


Primary Responsibilities

  1. Grain Accounting
  • Record grain transactions including entering purchase and sales settlements and processing invoices/payments
  • Maintain accurate records, respond to customer inquiries, and ensure timely application of invoices/payments
  • Coordinate vendor payment cycles to optimize cash flow, maximize available discounts, and avoid penalties
  • Reconcile vendor accounts, resolve discrepancies, and maintain accurate and current records 
  • Monitor and manage customer account activity, including collections and credit risk assessments while ensuring confidentiality
  • Assist with month-end close procedures, including reconciliations and preparation of management reports
  • Support compliance with internal policies, external regulations, and audit requirements

2. Operational Support

  • Participate in physical inventory counts, which requires climbing stairs and ladders to access inventory stored in bins at considerable heights 
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while exercising good judgement, professional conduct, and maintaining confidentiality in business matters
  • Demonstrate high-level detail orientation in documentation, data entry, reporting and communication on accounting records
  • Perform duties outside normal responsibilities as needed to support the team and organizational goals
  • Exemplify good stewardship of company resources 
  • Comply with SDSP’s Safe Quality Food (SQF) food safety program and policies

3. Communicate and Collaborate

  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure alignment between operational activities and accounting practices
  • Promote a high performing team, demonstrating personal accountability and cooperation
  • Professionally interact and communicate, verbally and in writing, with teammates, clients, and stakeholders


Basic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with preference given to post-secondary education in accounting or business
  • Proficiently use Microsoft Office products and able to master new software programs
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, as well as attention to detail
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk frequently and occasionally bend, squat, climb, and kneel
  • Must be comfortable with heights, and able to physically climb stairs and ladders as this position participates in physical inventory measurements as required
