Cold Spray Engineer Intern
Job Description
At Relativity Space, we have two audacious goals: to build the next great commercial launch company with Terran R and to become America's leading force in additive manufacturing innovation. Both contribute to our long-term vision of creating humanity’s industrial base on Mars, paving the way for interplanetary life to expand the possibilities of the human experience. This journey begins right here on Earth – where we design, build, and fly rockets to deliver customer payloads to orbit. Terran R, our medium-to-heavy lift reusable rocket, fulfills the growing demand for launch capacity, thanks to our iterative approach that accelerates design, testing, and development while minimizing costs. While our groundbreaking research and development in 3D printing pushes the boundaries of large-scale additive manufacturing.
Your journey with us is more than just a job – it’s an opportunity to shape the future of aerospace technology, additive manufacturing, and the human experience alongside a community of passionate, creative individuals. Join us on this extraordinary journey, as we work together to transform our vision into reality.
About the Team:
The Cold Spray team at Relativity is a young team supporting the manufacturing of the next generation AEON-R engines. We operate like a startup within a larger organization — agile, hands-on, and driven by curiosity. As part of the team, you will be assisting in onboarding new process monitoring tools, developing toolpath for complex geometry parts, as well as inspecting sprayed parts. Our mission is to productionize cold spray into a scalable, reliable manufacturing process capable of supporting engine production at the rate required for Terran R launch operations
- Cold spray powder flowability characterization
- Feedstock powder phase identification and its impact on the mechanical properties of sprayed parts
- Toolpath generation for complex geometry parts
- Process monitoring tools integration and evaluation
Skills/Competencies we're looking for (it’s not necessary to meet every individual skill requirement):
- Current undergraduate or graduate student earning your degree in materials, aerospace, and mechanical engineering
- Strong understanding of cold spray process. Hands-on cold spray experience is preferred, not required
- Familiar with robotic control and toolpath generation for cold spray manufacturing
- To be successful in this role, you need to be able to thrive in ambiguity, identify problems and quickly resolve them, and provide definition to the previously undefined
- You will need to balance a scrappy, get-it-done attitude with a vision for the long-term processes required for scaling and efficiency!
