Description
We are seeking an experienced Utility Interconnection Engineer to drive all technical aspects of utility interconnection across a range of distributed generation and utility-scale solar and energy storage projects.
This role will serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on interconnection requirements, coordinate closely with utilities and internal teams, and ensure efficient, compliant, and cost-effective approvals.
The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong utility coordination skills, document management rigor, and the ability to train and elevate internal teams.

Key Responsibilities:
Utility Interconnection Leadership
- Serve as the company's SME on utility interconnection policies, processes, tariffs, technical standards, and regulatory guidelines across multiple jurisdictions.
- Lead the development of interconnection application packages, including detailed:
o Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
o Three Line Diagrams
o Relaying, metering, and protection drawings
- Review and interpret utility standards and requirements, ensuring accurate and compliant designs.
- Research and maintain a knowledge base of interconnection standards across utilities. Utility and Stakeholder Coordination
- Interface directly with utility engineers to facilitate application review, advocate for cost-effective solutions, and resolve technical disputes.
- Push back on excessive or unnecessary upgrade requirements when appropriate.
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients regarding interconnection issues, providing clear and timely communication. Document Management and Compliance
- Oversee the creation & revision of interconnection standards documents.
- Monitor ongoing changes in interconnection codes, standards, and regulations, ensuring that internal processes remain compliant.
- Conduct technical QC reviews of internal and external interconnection documents prior to submission. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with project teams (electrical, structural, civil) during early-stage development and feasibility assessments.
- Provide technical input during project kickoff and development stages to ensure interconnection feasibility aligns with site and design constraints. Training and Process Improvement
- Develop internal standards, templates, and checklists for interconnection documentation.
- Train and mentor junior engineers and drafting staff involved in interconnection preparation.
- Continuously improve interconnection planning and document management processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy. Strategic and Analytical Support
- Analyze interconnection trends, such as approval timelines, upgrade cost drivers, and success rates, to inform business strategy.
- Support strategic planning for project development based on utility capacity, interconnection queue analysis, and anticipated regulatory changes.
Preferred Backgrounds:
We are open to candidates from a range of backgrounds, including:
- Development Engineering roles at solar developers or IPPs, with experience managing interconnection strategy and utility coordination.
- Utility-side engineers who have evaluated and processed solar interconnection applications and understand internal approval workflows.
- Engineering consulting or EPC firms with hands-on experience preparing interconnection packages across various utilities and jurisdictions. Candidates with hybrid experience across these areas are especially valuable.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of experience with solar PV or energy storage interconnection applications
- Strong understanding of NEC, IEEE, NESC, and utility interconnection requirements
- Proficiency in reading and preparing SLDs and interconnection drawings
- Familiarity with grid modeling tools (e.g., CYME, SKM, PSCAD, PSS/E) is a plus
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Highly organized with strong document control discipline
Location
This position will be based out of our exciting downtown Hoboken, NJ Headquarters with the flexibility to work a hybrid in-office and remotely weekly schedule. We are next to public transportation options from NYC and Northern NJ. We also provide a parking spot for the days when an employee wishes to drive to the office and for those that utilize public transportation, we will cover the costs associated with traveling to and from the office.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $140,000-$175,000
