Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates operating health centers across the U.S. Planned Parenthood Action Fund is an independent, nonpartisan, not-for-profit membership organization formed as the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education. We are seeking a Manager Director to support the Development division. This position will report to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) of PPFA. The Office of the CDO (OCDO) provides management, oversight and strategic direction across all donor audiences and channels of the Development org unit. The Office ensures revenue generation, donor diversity, and philanthropic support is nimble, enables collaboration with Planned Parenthood affiliates, and ensures adherence with governance and compliance requirements.
This position is required to work on a hybrid schedule with 2 days per week in either our NYC or DC offices.
Purpose:
The Managing Director, Development is responsible for the efficient functioning of the Division, which has more than 150 staff members, raises more than $400 million annually for the Planned Parenthood national office (PPFA/PPAF/PPVotes/PPFedPAC), and provides financial support to the organization’s c3 affiliates, as well as affiliated c4 organizations, across the country. They will serve as a key partner for the CDO, a partner and counsel for the other members of the Senior Development Leadership Team, and a leader, connector, and partner to all staff in the division. The Managing Director will work to ensure that the CDO’s focus is on keeping pace with the Development division’s long range goals and the demands of their office while also balancing external commitments. Across the organization, this is an influential and visible role that requires an individual who is comfortable influencing without direct authority, unflappable in the face of high stress situations, able to respond to multiple competing demands, and is a true team player.
Engagement:
The Managing Director will oversee a team responsible for scheduling, administration and operational support for the CDO and the division. They report to the CDO and will be a member of the Development division’s Senior Development Leadership Team (SDLT). The Managing Director serves as a key partner with other divisions across the organization, and represents the division at meetings of managing directors as well as other cross-divisional groups. They may represent the CDO at meetings of the Boards’ Strategy and Program Committees and partner with the CDO at meetings of the Boards’ Finance Committees. The Managing Director also represents the CDO at internal and external meetings and events, as needed.
Delivery:
The Managing Director will provide critical support to the CDO and the Division in the following ways:
1) Principal support (50%)
The primary focus of this role is to provide principal support, leadership, and management of the OCDO Team. This includes fully understanding and advancing PPFA’s fundraising priorities through the strategic use of the CDO’s time, relationships, and engagements. The Managing Director will be responsible for balancing the needs of stakeholders, especially the staff, ELT, affiliate CEOs and CDOs, and donors and determining what/who requires the most immediate attention, by whom and when. They will oversee the development of the CDO's strategic calendar and daily agenda, ensuring that priorities are identified and aligned for the CDO. They will ensure that the CDO is fully briefed and prepared with supporting materials for all internal and external events and meetings, including drafting/reviewing materials. They will lead a proactive strategy that enables the CDO to develop relationships and engage key stakeholder communities in service of fundraising goals and objectives. They will also oversee the CDO’s follow up and debriefing process, ensuring accuracy and consistent follow-up and facilitation of next steps with internal/external stakeholders.
2) Multi-year Strategic Financial Planning and Budgeting (20%)
The Managing Director will lead the division’s goal setting and revenue budgeting process. They will work with the other leaders within the Development division to plan annual OKRs, and budgets, with a keen eye towards the organization’s long-range goals, cost to raise funds, and return on investment. They lead the division in multi-year planning and scenario planning efforts.
3) Employee Engagement and Furthering Equity and Belonging within the Division (5%)
The Managing Director oversees efforts to ensure that the CDO and SDLT act on engagement results and take meaningful steps to move the needle on employee experience for all employees. This includes building systems to facilitate internal collaboration and coordination within the division, planning meetings and retreats for the SDLT and DLT in order to break down silos within the division, and centering an equity and belonging lens in all efforts in partnership with PCE.
4) Financial Oversight for Collaborative and Shared Fundraising Programs (5%)
The Managing Director and their team are responsible for overseeing the distribution of shared national office fundraising revenue to affiliates in accordance with the rules in the NPS Plan, which covers the sharing of offline and online revenue. The team provides semiannual reports to affiliates with the names of PPFA and Action Fund donors and collects the dues that affiliates pay to the national office, which go into the Mission Investment Fund. The team also provides fiscal management for the Collaborative Fundraising Program (a partnership between PPFA and 9 affiliates), including budgeting and distribution of joint fundraising revenue.
5) Oversight of Affiliate and Board Relations (10%)
The Managing Director will provide oversight and act as a connector for the CDO’s priorities in providing oversight to Affiliate Relations and Leadership Engagement, which is responsible for maximizing the impact of the Office of the President, leading special fundraising initiatives, strengthening our relationships with affiliates, and promoting the success of affiliate development programs. They also provide strategic oversight for Board relations.
6) Oversight of Administrative Support (5%)
The Managing Director will provide oversight of administrative support to the CDO, proactively communicating with the division, and managing division budgeting & expense management efforts.
7) Org-Wide Initiatives and Division Risk Identification and Mitigation (5%)
The Managing Director will partner with peers across the organization in leading organization-wide initiatives, including strategic planning and outcomes measurements. They also lead the Division’s work to identify risks and develop mitigation plans.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
● 10+ years’ experience managing portfolios of work in complex environments is required.
● Significant leadership and management experience, ideally with some time working in fundraising specifically is required.
● At least 3 years experience as a Chief of Staff to a C-level executive is required.
● Experience leading within organizations with complex financial/legal structures and operations is required.
● Deep personal commitment to Planned Parenthood’s mission, sexual and reproductive rights and health care is required.
● Experience in an organization with an affiliate structure is advantageous, but not required.
● A leadership style that prioritizes inclusivity and brings an equity lens to decision-making
● Ability to work strategically and collaboratively across departments and operate in a matrixed environment, to sustain a sense of order and deliver results
● A proven track record of building strong relationships with multiple high-level stakeholders, including donors, board members, campaign staff, party committees, partner organizations, and cross-team colleagues, based on effective interpersonal skills
● Experience in strategic planning, program planning, budget preparation, and fiscal management
● Ability to work independently, problem solve, take initiative, and establish priorities among multiple projects
● Ability to drive change in a consensus-oriented environment
● Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and strong attention to detail
● Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations and exercise good judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic, deadline-driven environment in an organized and professional manner
● Demonstrated ability to maintain confidence and protect confidential information
● Ability to work some evening or weekends as required to meet the responsibilities of this role

Roles that are denoted as NYC, DC, or both will work a hybrid schedule and are expected to work in their assigned PPFA office a minimum 2 days per week unless the role is denoted as onsite, which requires working onsite full time or 5 days per week.
