Description:Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Chairperson of the Committee on Special Education, the Community Outreach Coordinator will work on maintaining, promoting, and coordinating activities for the Committee on Special Education (CSE) and Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE). The CSEs/CPSEs support school-aged and preschool-aged students with disabilities across New York City. The Community Outreach Coordinator supports the CSE/CPSE leadership team in family outreach and communications with New York City Public Schools (NYCPS) staff and partners. The Community Outreach Coordinator is expected to perform tasks as assigned as well as special projects. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Builds and maintains positive relationships on behalf of the CSEs/CPSEs with families, staff within the Special Education Office, other NYCPS offices as needed, and non-NYCPS partners as needed.
Responsibilities
- Support the Chairperson of the Committee on Special Education or designee with matters related to parent outreach and communication, resolution of parent complaints, advocates or external partners, and implementation of CSE initiatives.
- Communicate with guardians of preschool students referred for a special education evaluation to ensure that they understand the process and their due process rights.
- Assist guardians of students suspected of having a disability in navigating the evaluation process in a timely fashion.
- Support at all stages the implementation of key NYCPS communications and public outreach initiatives at the individual CSE/CPSE, from project management to coordinating and managing the logistics of initiatives.
- Create, implement, and continuously improve upon CSE/CPSE communications and outreach initiatives to families and relevant stakeholders about special education processes and services.
- Work with the CSE leadership and the Deputy Senior Executive Director in creating and implementing comprehensive family engagement plans and strategies with relevant stakeholders, other NYCPS offices, outside organizations, and non-NYCPS evaluation teams.
- Incorporate stakeholder feedback effectively and make suggestions to CSE leadership and senior CSE leadership based on aforementioned feedback.
- Create, implement, and continuously improve upon CSE/CPSE tracking systems to ensure timely evaluation, re-evaluation, and provision of special education services to all eligible students, placement of eligible students in recommended programs, and satisfactory resolution of all family and staff escalations.
- Maintain and update all preschool student record keeping and information systems.
- Assist CSE leadership and senior CSE leadership in building, implementing, and maintaining knowledge management structures and systems.
- Manage all student-related correspondence and materials, including event mailings and meeting notices.
- Coordinate and schedule meetings for and with the CSE and the Deputy Senior Executive Director of Student Support Services and Evaluations.
- Responsible for all administrative tasks and clerical duties necessary to the functioning of the CSE/CPSE.
Qualification Requirements:
Minimum
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two (2) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six (6) years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
- Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one (1) year of experience as described in “1” above.

- Ability to organize facts and present information and figures in a clear, concise, and logical manner, both spoken and written.

- Ability to effectively work under pressure, use independent judgment and produce a high-quality work product within tight time constraints.
- Familiarity with NYCPS.
- Familiarity with special education processes and procedures.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
Salary:
$62,707 (New Hire Rate)
$72,114 - $97,343 (Incumbent - 2 years of full-time continuous City service)
(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
