Director, DTC Software Engineering
Job Description
Who We Are:
Since 1906, New Balance has empowered people through sport and craftsmanship to create positive change in communities around the world. We innovate fearlessly, guided by our core values and driven by the belief that conventions were meant to be challenged. We foster a culture in which every associate feels welcomed and respected, where leaders and creatives are inspired to shape the world of tomorrow by taking bold action today.
JOB MISSION:
New Balance is seeking an innovative, experienced technology leader to run the engineering organization that builds and operates our global direct to consumer (DTC) and omni channel commerce platforms. In this highly matrixed environment, you will set the technical vision, scale high performing teams, and turn ideas into secure, resilient, and delightful customer experiences—while partnering closely with Product, QA, and Retail Technology organizations that report outside of your span of control.
Key ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Strategy & Architecture
• Define and enable a multi year commerce architecture that delivers reliability, agility and growth.
• Champion responsible AI adoption to enhance developer efficiency, quality engineering, and overall workforce productivity.
• Influence product roadmaps owned by Product Managers and Product Owners, ensuring technical strategy, scalability, and innovation are embedded in every release.
• Own engineering OKRs and technical backlogs, balancing speed, quality, cost, security, and compliance.
Delivery & Operations
• Oversee the full SDLC for Salesforce Commerce Cloud (SFCC), APIs, and middleware services.
• Partner with our QA organization to embed quality engineering practices, test automation, and release readiness into every delivery increment.
• Collaborate with SRE and Security to maintain industry leading uptime, observability, and reliability for our platforms.
Partnership & Governance
• Work with Product, UX, Retail Tech, Data & Analytics, and Marketing to deliver seamless online to offline customer journeys—and provide clear technical insights that shape future roadmaps.
• Align Agile ceremonies and PI planning with capacity via Scrum Masters and Release Train Engineers (SAFe).
• Own engineering budgets, vendor contracts, and executive level reporting.
People & Culture
• Lead 3-5 engineering managers and ~90 engineers across North America, EMEA, and APAC; foster inclusion, trust, and high accountability.
• Mentor senior engineers across front end, back end, and full stack domains; create clear career paths and convert high performing contractors to FTEs.
• Drive change management initiatives that build enthusiasm and reduce resistance to new ways of working, including AI enabled ways of working.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SUCCESS:
• Minimum of 10 years in software engineering, 5+ years leading distributed teams.
• Experience leading global teams and managing off-shore resources (associates and third-party contractors).
• Proven success scaling high traffic e commerce or DTC platforms and rolling out headless/composable architectures.
• Demonstrated ability to influence cross functional roadmaps in matrixed organizations.
• Deep knowledge of agile/SAFe, DevOps, cloud native (Azure preferred), microservices, and API first design.
• Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and change leadership skills.
• Working knowledge of AI ethics, governance, and responsible use practices.
• Ability to mentor, motivate and develop best-in-class engineers and drive innovation throughout NB.
