A Day in the Life
Cardiac surgery represents end-state treatment in the care continuum for many cardiovascular diseases. There are approximately 1.8 million cardiac surgical procedures in the world on an annual basis. Cardiac surgery remains extremely important in treating complex disease and remains the gold standard on which many of the other therapies being developed in Cardiovascular are based upon.At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. We are hiring a Principal Medical Affairs Specialist to join the Cardiac Surgery Clinical Research Medical Science (CRMS) team, reporting to the Director of CRMS to assist in the acquisition, assimilation, and dissemination of clinical evidence for extracorporeal therapies (ECT) including cannulae, perfusion and blood management. The Medical Affairs team evaluates the evidence landscape to tell a clinical story grounded in evidence with the intent of building physician confidence in our therapy knowledge and products, improving physician practice, and advancing patient care. You will play an important role in monitoring, analyzing, and communicating scientific literature and Congress presentations and developing communications for internal teams and external physician customers. You will partner closely with Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Medical Education, Marketing, Physician Relations, Public Relations and Clinical Research teams to best leverage clinical evidence.
The Principal Medical Affairs Specialist must be detail-oriented and self-motivated, with excellent analytic, facilitation, and communication skills (both oral and written). This role works collaboratively with nearly all functional groups within the ECT team of the Cardiac Surgery business, including Marketing, Clinical, Regulatory, Research and Development, and Physician Education.
Role and Responsibilities
- Keep abreast of novel data, trends, leading developments, and technology by continuously monitoring published scientific literature and attending scientific conferences
- Critically evaluate clinical publications and conference/congress presentations and integrate new findings into existing knowledge base
- Participate in cross-functional literature review meetings to ensure all functions are aligned on the key clinical data
- Maintain clinical evidence communication tools used by the global ECT team
- Develop/update/create physician podium presentations for major congresses
- Evaluate and approve promotional materials and marketing plans for ECT portfolio
- Develop clinical study designs, endpoints and protocol content in partnership with clinical research teams
Other duties to include
- Leverages medical/scientific expertise to address medical information (MI) inquiries from HCPs and internal personnel.
- Demonstrates the ability to search, critically evaluate, and synthesize published medical and scientific literature, clinical study data, or other relevant data sources to address medical information inquiries.
- May author or contribute to research, writing, and editing of manuscripts, State of the Art assessments, and development of other scientific materials.
- Collaborates and develops trusted relationships with key functions; drive and influence evidence-based scientific decision making across the matrix organization.
Must Have; Minimum Requirements

- Bachelor’s degree
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in a role involving developing communications for the scientific community (e.g., Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, and/or healthcare industry)
- Or an Advanced degree with minimum of 5 years’ experience in a role involving developing communications for the scientific community (e.g., Medical Affairs, Clinical Research, and/or healthcare industry)
Nice to Have
- Advanced degree (Masters or PhD) with experience in the medical device industry
- Experience in scientific communication and literature review searches
- Experience creating professional podium presentations for scientific meetings
- Publication experience in the cardiovascular disease space
