The base salary range for this position is dependent upon experience and location, ranging from: $175,000 - $219,000
Job Summary:
The Director of Indirect Tax will lead the strategy, compliance, audits, and risk management for all indirect taxes in the US. This role is pivotal in ensuring tax efficiency, compliance, and alignment with Avangrid’s operations and sustainability goals, promoting business growth, and driving process enhancement initiatives.
The successful candidate will bring multi-state tax technical expertise in both transaction taxes and complex property tax administration, along with an innovative mindset for supporting our efforts to modernize our tax administration processes.
A key focus of this role will be transitioning the indirect tax function from an outsourced model to a fully in-house team, building internal capabilities and fostering a high-performance culture. The Director will also spearhead the implementation and optimization of tax technology solutions, including ERP integrations, tax engines, and data analytics tools, to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and scalability of tax operations.
This role will develop partnerships with key stakeholders across the organization to help strengthen the tax team’s connection to and interface with our business partners. They will provide mentoring and coaching while driving the implementation of tools and process enhancements designed to positively impact how the non-income tax team is able to deliver for business operations across the United States.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced problem solver with excellent communication and leadership skills who can effectively multi-task and prioritize competing projects and deadlines while delivering results aligning with corporate objectives. Experience with the energy industry and regulated utilities is strongly preferred. This is a strategic leadership role that requires a forward-thinking mindset, strong technical expertise, and the ability to drive transformation in a complex tax environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspire a performance culture through demonstrating accountability for delivering results, supporting growth, and encouraging innovation.
Liaise with cross function teams across the Global Business to facilitate operational enhancement initiatives.
Coordinate team involvement, internal and external resources to ensure objectives are met and projects remain in scope and are completed timely.
Challenge tax team to achieve business objectives and leverage emerging technologies to help identify process improvements and automation opportunities.
Oversee Indirect Tax team execution of deliverables for the business, including compliance, audits, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting and training.
Coordinate with Indirect Tax Managers to ensure that organizational and tax technical knowledge and best practices are well documented and organized across all business areas.
Optimize tools and oversee team execution of various departmental data gathering, analysis, and reporting obligations including reporting and execution of controls.
Research and analysis of tax laws, regulations, rulings, and court cases to support business growth, ratemaking, budgeting, legislative efforts, and risk mitigation.
Required Qualifications:
BS/BA Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax and at least 10 years relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Multi-state Indirect Tax and Property Tax team training and oversight.
Ability to articulate complex tax concepts to a variety of audiences and at all levels of the organization.
Experience with automation of tax services and tax compliance tools.
Successful people leader capable of translating business knowledge and concerns to team to foster growth and effective process improvement.
Ability to be adaptable and thrive in a demanding, rapidly changing business environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Advanced degree, CMI, or equivalent experience.
SAP (including S4/HANA). System upgrade or migration support experience.
Property Tax database implementation and administration.
Energy or Utility experience.
Knowledge of and experience with accounting. IFRS experience highly preferred.
Forward looking leader with a record of innovation and problem solving.
Robust understanding of SAP platform and reporting capabilities.
