About the Role
We are seeking a Manager, Software Engineering to lead a highly collaborative team focused on clinical data integrations, EMR connectivity, and partnerships with hospital networks and reference labs. This is a Palo Alto–based leadership role that combines technical depth, team management, and stakeholder engagement—both internal and external.
You’ll be responsible for building and scaling cloud-native integration platforms, primarily using Java, MuleSoft, and AWS, to ensure Guardant’s digital infrastructure enables seamless interoperability with Epic, OncoEMR, hospital systems, and third-party labs. This role is critical to driving clinical adoption, operational efficiency, and data reliability across Guardant’s enterprise offerings.
Key Responsibilities
Team & Project Leadership
Lead and mentor a team of backend and integration engineers focused on data exchange between Guardant and external clinical systems.
Oversee delivery of EMR integrations, including Epic, OncoEMR, and other hospital EHR platforms.
Drive development of scalable services and APIs that enable lab partnerships and external data connectivity.
Architecture & Execution
Architect and scale MuleSoft-based integration flows and microservices that manage clinical and lab data pipelines.
Ensure solutions are cloud-native, deployed on AWS/Kubernetes, and align with Guardant’s data security, compliance, and observability standards.
Drive cross-functional initiatives by collaborating with Product, Clinical, Commercial, and Compliance teams.
External Stakeholder Engagement
Serve as a technical point of contact for reference labs, hospital networks, and third-party integration partners.
Work closely with external IT and data teams to define interface requirements, manage onboarding, and troubleshoot connectivity issues.
Represent the engineering organization in strategic partner discussions, ensuring technical feasibility and long-term scalability.
Operational & Engineering Excellence
Champion engineering best practices including CI/CD, test automation, observability, and resiliency.
Monitor integration KPIs and operational metrics to ensure ongoing reliability and performance of partner-facing systems.
Collaborate with peer leaders across Palo Alto and India to ensure delivery alignment and team health.
Qualifications
10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 3+ years in a people management role, ideally leading backend or integration-focused teams.
Deep experience with Java (Spring Boot) and MuleSoft in a production environment.
Proven success with cloud-native development on AWS and Kubernetes.
Experience delivering and maintaining integrations with EMRs (Epic, OncoEMR), hospital systems, or labs.
Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage with external technical partners and cross-functional internal teams.
Demonstrated ability to manage complex stakeholder needs, prioritize work across multiple initiatives, and deliver in a regulated environment.
Nice to Have
Experience in Life Sciences, Diagnostics, or Healthcare IT.
Familiarity with HL7, FHIR, and other healthcare interoperability standards.
Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
Background in regulated environments including HIPAA, CAP/CLIA, or FDA guidelines.

Additional Information
Hybrid Work Model: At Guardant Health, we have defined days for in-person/onsite collaboration and work-from-home days for individual-focused time. All U.S. employees who live within 50 miles of a Guardant facility will be required to be onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. We have found aligning our scheduled in-office days allows our teams to do the best work and creates the focused thinking time our innovative work requires. At Guardant, our work model has created flexibility for better work-life balance while keeping teams connected to advance our science for our patients.
For positions based in Palo Alto, CA or Redwood City, CA, the base salary range for this full-time position is $182,500 to $250,950. The range does not include benefits, and if applicable, bonus, commission, or equity.
Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including, but not limited to, job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. If you are selected to move forward, the recruiting team will provide details specific to the factors above.
Employee may be required to lift routine office supplies and use office equipment. Majority of the work is performed in a desk/office environment; however, there may be exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazard material in the laboratory environment. Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
