Position Summary: The Project Engineering Manager directs and coordinates the Project Engineering Department resources and administrative approach in the project engineering and project management of products and customer orders. The manager cultivates, manages, and improves the department resources, oversees development of initiatives and capabilities, is responsible for department administrative responsibilities and cross-functional coordination, manages the day-to-day activities of the department, and provides overall oversight for the execution of engineered projects to ensure product offerings meet customer requirements and contractual obligations.
Key Results Areas by level of work:
Level II: Service – Coordinating “production” with problem solving and prevention
Resource management (material and people)
- Develop, lead, and manage a high performing team to maximize customer satisfaction.
- Deliver projects on time, on budget, with performance and quality specified by stakeholders to enhance long term viability of the organization.
- Provide oversight of all engineered product projects and advise management of developments which may affect safety, quality, schedule, profit, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations.
- Plan, coordinate and direct department activities to effectively and efficiently design new products, modify existing designs, resulting in equipment designs that minimize material and labor costs.
- Build and manage resources, processes, systems, and controls to effectively execute the project engineering function.
- Analyze market factors, future business, company capacity, technology trends, and human resource needs to ensure appropriate capability and staffing for future projects.
- Define expectations, delegate as appropriate, provide positive reinforcement, promote team problem solving, coach and develop employees to enhance employee engagement,collaboration, and effectiveness.
- Train and ensure all assigned employees are aware of and comply with company, industry, government, and customer policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Ensure integration between departments and leaders while managing change through personal impact on people’s understanding, attitudes and behavior.
Resource scheduling, output management and reporting
- Oversee reviews of all department output for compliance with stated requirements of industry Codes and standards, governmental, and contractual.
- Collaborate with executive leadership to develop and define long range company goals and objectives while supplying expertise and guidance on engineered projects and systems.
- Evaluate department activities and initiatives relative to company goals; prepare and present periodic reports showing applicable metrics and statistics. Develop specific short-term and long-term goals and plans with supporting budget requests and financial estimates.
- Provide effective communication and reporting to ensure all stakeholders are working together.
- Consult with management, production, and marketing staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing products.
- Responsible for meeting financial targets and key performance indicators including productivity, operating income, revenue, margins, growth and customer satisfaction..
Continuous Improvement
- Assess programmatic and department activities and risks to make improvements for more consistent and predictable product and service.
- Maintain and continually improve methodologies used in the operation of the department and recommend/develop new systems, methodologies, and technologies which may improve operations and/or capabilities in the future.
- Manage time and resource investments to implement proactive product improvements. Includes strategic partnership development and maintaining knowledge of emerging technologies and trends.
- Advance the processes, tools, and people within the Engineering Department to facilitate execution of customer contracts.
- Plans and formulates aspects of research and development proposals
Equipment & process maintenance
- Support business development by working with new and existing customers to understand their requirements and develop solutions for their needs.
- Develop business capabilities to enter new markets and progressively expand market share in all product and service areas to enhance long term viability of the organization.
- Identify, recommend and implement new relationships, processes, technologies and systems to align engineering capabilities with strategic business direction.
- Terminate practices, systems, and processes that are no longer aligned with the strategic direction.
- Create a culture of continuous improvement, accountability and resilience through process documentation, execution, audit, and refinement throughout the engineered product teams.
- Enable and empower streamlining the processes that span across departments.
- Assess, improve, and execute cross-organizational alignment and integration of engineering, supply chain, business development, product management, production, and sales functions.
Professional Development (self and reports)
- Conduct performance reviews, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints and resolving problems. Ensure all direct reports have a personal development plan for improvement.
- Continuous reflection on current skill set, personally and within the department, to determine areas of focus for upgrading skill set, effectiveness, and efficiency within the department, through people development, process improvement and expansion of technology to meet the constantly evolving needs of our customer base.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience and abilities required.
Education and Training
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required (mechanical or chemical preferred)
Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in an engineering field
- 2+ years management experience
- Minimum 3 years experience with recognized quality systems (ISO, AS, QS, RS).
- Familiarity with ANSI Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance (GD&T).
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing concepts.
- Working knowledge of metal machining, welding, and non-destructive processes, and familiarity with casting, coating, and finishing processes.
Other:
- Must be willing to work overtime as required.
- International travel may be required.
- National travel may be required.
- Travel up to 25% of working time.
Skills:
