Job Description

As an Automation, Instrumentation and Controls (AIC) Engineer at CRB, you are essential to the creation of purposeful, high-performance processes and facilities that have a positive, lasting impression on people, our clients and the community. Your experience allows you to execute and lead large projects through all phases of design, documentation and administration, as well as actively support large projects within a multi-discipline team setting. You will leverage your creativity with your knowledge of mechanical system controls, process automation controls and regulatory standards to solve problems that balance technical and design excellence.

About the Role

The Automation Engineer V – Senior Lead is responsible for overseeing the discipline at a project level and managing the project discipline budget on simple to complex projects of all sizes. The Senior Lead has a thorough understanding of the development and field implementation of documents through all project phases. The Senior Lead Engineer is responsible for directing and managing the workflows and execution of design and engineering support staff (Entry-Level to Senior) to meet client expectations and project goals.

This position is out of our St. Louis office. 

Core Activities

  • Works with a Project Manager on proposal development, man-hour planning and project scheduling for the discipline scope of work on large, advanced/complex projects.
  • Identifies and resolves advanced non-compliant existing conditions during site walks and construction field surveys.
  • Develops construction drawing packages and writes construction specifications on advanced and complex projects without oversight.
  • Provides lead and advanced support of construction activities such as RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development and construction progress reports.
  • Conducts technical and leadership interviews.
  • Conducts quality checking of documents for advanced complex projects (e.g., technical verification of design calculations and documentation) and drives overall project quality.
  • Provides mentorship to Discipline Engineer I, II, III and IV and/or Designer I, II and III
  • Leads advanced project system design programming and master planning with support from Senior Engineer
  • Leads a team of discipline staff in the execution of advanced projects discipline design and engineering

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • 15+ years of relevant experience, preferably in a design firm environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Microsoft Office, and discipline-specific engineering software
  • Deep understanding of cGMPs and experience with advanced technology projects (e.g., R&D labs, biotech, pharma, food & nutrition, consumer products)
  • Expertise in:
  • Engineering calculations and system design implementation
  • Control system schematics, panel fabrication drawings, and field wiring plans
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Electrical codes, mechanical and building codes, and industry standards
  • Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) design
  • Strong coordination skills with cross-discipline teams, construction partners, vendors, and manufacturers
  • Ability to perform advanced design calculations independently
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development through seminars and conferences
