This role is within the Controllership Organization supporting AMEX Assurance Company (AAC), a wholly owned subsidiary of American Express Company.  AAC is primarily a property and casualty travel-related insurance company that underwrites fee-based insurance and no additional charge (NAC) insurance products for US Card Members.  The AAC Controller will lead a team of Controllership professionals responsible for ensuring the appropriate accounting and reporting for AAC.

The Director will have oversight over the month-end GAAP and Statutory accounting performed by the team.  They will ensure accurate and timely delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting and reporting as well as statutory filings to the state/municipalities, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, and AM Best insurance rating agency.   The Director presents to the AAC Board, leads internal/external audits and works closely with the AAC President and product team on advisory support including review of new product offerings. As a member of the AAC Reserve committee, the Director is responsible for reviewing and setting reserves consistent with actuarial analysis and experience as well as evaluating changes in reserves.  The successful candidate will be skilled at prioritizing, organizing teams and an effective communicator that can build strong business relationships.

  • Lead a team of 3 colleagues, ensuring progress against team goals while also having a strong focus on career and development.
  • Provide financial reporting advice to all AAC partners
  • Lead the execution of close-related activities including accounting and reporting for the AAC legal entity
  • Ensure accurate and timely delivery of all statutory filings
  • Responsible for effective operation of control and compliance-related activities
  • Manage internal and external audits
  • Build relationships with the AAC Board and product partners to understand business priorities
  • Oversight of third parties involved in accounting and reporting

Qualifications

  • Minimum 5+ years of financial and accounting experience
  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Experience in property and casualty insurance is a plus 
  • A proven people leader who can inspire, influence, and generate followership.
  • Highly motivated individual with an ability to drive results, prioritize across multiple projects and work with ambiguity
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated comfort in navigating ambiguity, keeps calm under pressure, and can operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to collaborate across multiple functional teams and providing solutions to business/accounting challenges.

Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
